Word formation processes

Word formation processes

Text: Rosamund Moon. Optional reading.

This text invites us to learn and go deeper into the Multi-word items in the English language. The text corresponds to the Processes of word formation which is part of the third unit of the course. The text was sometimes a little bit hard to understand because of the many examples and concepts that it covers. But the information is very useful and accurate for English teaching students.

In the text are covered some text studies that help us to get an idea about how much multi-word items, such as phrasal verbs and collocations, are present in real spoken language. Also we can find in the reading some definitions on Multi-word items, collocations, phrasal verbs, the process of compounding words, idioms and different processes of word formation too, everything concerning with vocabulary connections. Moreover we can also discover some criteria that help us to distinguish holistic multi-word items from other kind of strings, these criteria are Institutionalism, fixedness and non-compositionality. Furthermore, in the text we can find out why the multi-word items are typically presented as a problem in teaching and learning a foreign language. The text tell us that the non-compositionality, whether syntactic, semantic or pragmatic in nature, means that multi-word items must be recognized, learned, decoded and encoded as holistic units, apart from highlight the importance of learning the use of these items in order to have an effective communication between the learner and the teacher, sounding more natural and acquiring fluency when producing the language in real life. That is very useful for me, as a teacher student, because I can learn and precede problems during a lecture. These kinds of problems are usually hard to identify without the corresponding knowledge, so this information gives me a tool to face the deficiencies.

Multi word items in the English language is an analysis that test, reflect and make us clear, first, the different word formation processes, the uncalculated value of the use of multi word items in concrete communicational situations, not forgetting the difficulties that it presents to foreign language teachers and students. It is possible then to say that the document is not only profitable but also coherent with the objectives of this course as it familiarises us with the numerous word formation processes which we use daily and the use and origin of idiomatic expressions used in real communicative contexts. In addition it helps us to focus on the lexical analysis of the language and it promotes the exercise of reflection and critical thinking about the teaching of lexis in the classroom which is extremely important to keep in mind when we are in front of the class in a real class situation.

Planning Phrasal Verbs

This activity was very useful in terms of practicing and developing our teacher habilities. Also, in terms of feedback is very motivating and less stressing to do a lesson plan without the pressure of doing for a real class situation. We can learn better and in a more natural way phrasal verbs and idioms preparing a class. I like the activity and also saw my classmates explaining their lessons in order to cooperate and give and receive feedback from one another.
